Education & Humanities Programs
As part of the effort to fulfill our mission, St. Croix Landmarks Society offers free or low-cost education and humanities programs throughout the year to the Virgin Islands community. The primary objective of our programs is to facilitate the development of a sense of self, place, and responsibility in youth and adult residents and visitors. We recognize the importance of knowing who we are and understanding the values that guided our ancestors. We believe that, with that knowledge, we can recognize where we fit in our families, the community, and the world; and we can embrace our responsibility to those who came before us and to those who will follow.
We organize classes, lectures, workshops, camps, and other interactive programs that promote stewardship of the Virgin Islands' historic sites, stories, traditions, customs, and people. These programs encourage the exchange of new and diverse ideas that can foster social and economic betterment. Our current education and humanities programs include:
Places That Matter
– an interactive experience where participants visit and discuss sites of historic and cultural significance on St. Croix
Come Home to St. Croix
–a week-long appreciation of St. Croix's culture, traditions, and families
Culture & History Workshops
– hands-on workshops led by tradition bearers who impart knowledge of culture and history to K-12 school groups and other youth groups
Discover Camp Programs
– summer day camp programs where 6- to 12-year-old campers learn about natural and cultural resources in the Virgin Islands
Essay and Photo Competitions
– essay and photography competitions that challenge K-12 Virgin Island students to reflect on the importance of their community and heritage
Lectures & Dialogues
– various academic and thought-provoking lectures and discussions led by knowledgeable guest speakers on topics such as dialect, race and class relations, unsung historical figures, and more
Old Time Crucian Christmas
– four evenings in the holiday season during which families can enjoy St. Croix's traditional holiday foods, music, and décor
Victor Borge Listen & Learn
– named in honor of Danish entertainer and humanitarian Victor Borge, an opportunity through which Virgin Island students learn about diverse styles of music, song, and dance
