St. Croix Landmarks Society - Summer Camp

Discover St. Croix Camps

Have you ever gone on an archaeological dig to look for artifacts, and maybe even buried treasure? Do you want to find out about the real pirates of the Caribbean? Perhaps you would like to learn more about trade beads and trade routes, then make a beaded item to take home. At the St. Croix Landmarks Society, our summer program is up to new tricks! In summer of 2005, for the first time, we offered summer workshops to all of the other summer camp programs on St. Croix. These workshops were a huge success; more than 500 kids came to Estate Whim for one of four different hands-on activities. What were these activities?

Can You Dig It? Kids really got their hands dirty at our mock archaeological dig, doing hands-on science and learning about St. Croix’s history (funded in part by a grant from the Virgin Islands Humanities Council).

The Real Pirates of the Caribbean – Who were the pirates who traveled the waters of the Caribbean, stealing both ships and the treasures they held? Kids found out who these people were and how they lived, then made their own pirate flags to take home.

All About Chocolate – From watching a video about harvesting cacao, to peeling cacao seeds and grinding them up to make an Aztec chocolate drink, kids attending the chocolate workshop learned all about chocolate. At the end of this workshop, everyone got to mix ingredients in plastic bags to make a sweet treat.

Trade Beads and Trade Routes What were the first beads? What made beads so important as trade items? How did beads made in Europe and Africa end up in the Caribbean? Kids learned about trade beads and trade routes, then make their own beaded item to take home.

Summer Workshops at Whim will continue in the summer of 2006, with one or two new workshops added to those listed here. Check back around April 2006 to see what is new for next summer!
